Attention: A wheel bearing defect is indicated by the appearance of noise, especially when passing a sharp turn from the side of the wheel bearing, running on the outer radius of the turn.
Withdrawal
Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the vehicle and remove the front wheel.
Carefully remove the hub cap with a screwdriver or plastic hammer. The cap must be replaced. Fitting a used cap does not seal. In this case, penetrating water destroys the bearing in a short time.
Straighten out the locking pin -arrow- of the wheel hub nuts -1- with a crosscut saw.
Install the front wheel and lower the car.
Loosen the hub nut.
Attention: The nut is screwed in with a large tightening torque, therefore, when unscrewing it, the car must be with its wheels on the ground. Pull up the handbrake, shift into gear, depress the brake pedal.
Remove and hang the brake caliper.
Remove brake disc.
Unscrew the bolt -3- with a washer -4- and pull out the ABS impulse sensor (if installed) from the steering knuckle -1-.
Press out the wheel hub with the wheel bearings using a suitable puller.
Attention: Removed assembly (wheel hub with bearings) cannot be reinstalled.
Caution: If the bearing inner race has not been removed from the shaft, remove the protective shield. Bend the dust shield and remove the bearing race with a puller. To remove the protective shield, unscrew the 3 M6 bolts along the inner diameter with a wrench head.
Installation
If removed, install a protective shield and a new dust shield.
Screw the guide bush onto the axle.
Using tool BMW 312120, press the bearing assembly onto the axle.
Slightly screw on the new hub nut.
Insert and screw down the ABS pulse sensor.
Install brake disc.
Install brake caliper
Install the front wheel and lower the car. Shift into gear, apply the handbrake and depress the brake pedal.
Tighten the hub nut with a tightening torque of 290 Nm and lock. To do this, drive the tide of the nut into the groove on the axle with a drift.
Caution: Once the nut has been tightened to the correct torque, the bearing assembly cannot be reinstalled.
Install a new hub cap, previously covering it with a sealing mass.
Tighten wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
