Removal and installation the brake light switch (BMW 3 Series E46)
The brake light switch is located in the footwell area near the brake pedal support. It is a contactless electronic switch and is virtually wear-free.
1. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the cover on the left side of the footwell area, refer to Removal and installation the front leg area trim.
2. Disconnect the connector at the brake light switch "1" by squeezing the clamps. 2 - brake pedal. 3 - clutch switch.
3. Depress the brake pedal. Pull the pusher "1" and sleeve "2" fully forward "3".
4. In this position, remove the locking clips "4" and pull the switch back out of the holder.
1. Insert the switch with the sleeve fully extended into the pedal support and secure it in place.
2. Move the red locking sleeve towards the switch so that the collar of the sleeve is adjacent to the pedal support.
3. Connect the connector and secure it.
4. Check if the brake light comes on when the ignition is off and the brake pedal is pressed.
5. Replace the footwell cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the front leg area trim.
Removal
1. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the cover on the left side of the footwell area, refer to Removal and installation the front leg area trim.

2. Disconnect the connector at the brake light switch "1" by squeezing the clamps. 2 - brake pedal. 3 - clutch switch.

3. Depress the brake pedal. Pull the pusher "1" and sleeve "2" fully forward "3".
4. In this position, remove the locking clips "4" and pull the switch back out of the holder.
Installation
1. Insert the switch with the sleeve fully extended into the pedal support and secure it in place.
2. Move the red locking sleeve towards the switch so that the collar of the sleeve is adjacent to the pedal support.
3. Connect the connector and secure it.
4. Check if the brake light comes on when the ignition is off and the brake pedal is pressed.
5. Replace the footwell cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the front leg area trim.
