Setting the ignition timing using a test lamp (BMW 5 Series E12)

Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position, aligning the marks on the crankshaft pulley and on the timing mechanism drive cover.

Turn on the ignition and connect the test lamp to the "+" terminal on the ignition distributor housing and to ground.

Check the alignment of the marks on the rotor and the distributor housing, turn the distributor housing counterclockwise and gradually turn it in the opposite direction until the indicator lamp lights up. In this position, tighten the distributor housing mounting bolt.

Install the dust shield, rotor and distributor cap.
