Vehicle Identification Numbers (BMW 5 Series E28)

Improvement of manufactured products is a continuous process of any flow production. At the same time, except for cases of major design changes of models coming off the conveyor, the details of the modification are not covered in the vehicle operating manual. However, the manufacturer issues numbered lists of manufactured spare parts, due to which the information encoded in the identification numbers of the vehicle is of particular importance when purchasing such parts. When ordering the necessary spare part, try to provide the seller with as much information about your vehicle as possible. Be sure to provide the model name, year of manufacture, as well as the body and powertrain numbers.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on the right front fender splash guard, near the upper strut mount, on the driver's door and on a plate mounted on the top of the instrument panel, just below the windshield (see illustrations below).

The engine number is stamped on a milled area on the left wall of the cylinder block near the base of the engine oil dipstick guide tube.

The body number is located on the seam between the left front fender and the inner panel.



The VIN is stamped on the engine compartment bulkhead.





The VIN is also located on the edge of the driver's door of the car.
