Never lie under the vehicle or start the engine while the vehicle is supported only by the jack.
When changing a wheel, the vehicle must be parked on level ground with the parking brake fully engaged and the wheels locked. Set the transmission to reverse (manual) or to the Parking position (automatic). Pry up and remove the decorative cap (if it exists) using the pointed end of the balloon wrench. Loosen the wheel nuts half a turn, leaving them on the wheel until the wheel is lifted off the ground.
Place the head of the jack under the side of the car, making sure it fits into the hole provided for this purpose (directly behind the front wheel, or in front of the rear). Install the wheel wrench and turn the wrench handle clockwise until the wheel starts to lift off the ground. Loosen the wheel bolts completely, remove the wheel and install the spare wheel in its place.
Install the wheel bolts and tighten them with your fingers. Lower the vehicle by turning the wheelbrace counterclockwise. Remove the jack and tighten the bolts one by one diagonally to the required torque. If you do not have a torque wrench, have the bolt torques checked by a BMW dealer or wheel changer as soon as possible. Install decorative cap.
Towing
It is preferable, however, for any type of transmission to tow the vehicle with the drive trains raised above the ground (rear) wheels.
To hitch a towed vehicle, specially designed hardware must be used and must be attached to the vehicle's supporting frame and not to the bumper or bumper brackets. Cable-type towing equipment it is forbidden use on these vehicles.
Compliance with safety rules is one of the most important requirements when towing a car. The parking brake must be released and the transmission in neutral. Steering must be unlocked (ignition key in position «1»). Remember that when the engine is off, the power steering mechanism and the vacuum brake booster do not work.
