Replacing hub bearings (BMW 3 Series E21)

Removal

Remove the wheel hub.

After pressing out the seal, press out the inner bearing rings from the hub.

Press out the outer bearing rings using puller 00 8 550 or knock them out by inserting a mandrel into the slots in the hub.

Installation

Press new bearings into the hub, after applying grease, using a press and a mandrel in the following sequence:

• outer ring of outer bearing;
• inner ring of outer bearing;
• outer ring of inner bearing;
• inner ring of the inner bearing.

Fill the space between the working edges of the new seal with graphite grease and press the seal into the hub so that its end is in the same plane as the surface of the hub.

Install the hub and adjust the clearance in the hub bearings.
