Removal and installation the transverse suspension arm (BMW 3 Series E21)

Removal

Disconnect the end of the anti-roll bar from the suspension arm.

Disconnect the suspension arm from the front suspension crossmember.

Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the crown nut securing the ball joint pin of the lever to the steering knuckle.

Push the ball joint pin out of the steering knuckle using puller 31 1 100.

Check the radial clearance of the ball joint pin of the control arm, which should be 1.4 mm. If the radial clearance exceeds the specified value, replace the suspension arm.



Check the condition of the rubber-metal hinge of the lever, which is subject to replacement in case of breaks and one-sided "bulging" of the rubber when cutting their end surfaces. To press out and press in the rubber-metal hinge, use the device 31 1 000.

Installation

The suspension arm is installed in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

• replace the self-locking nuts each time the lever is removed;
• the bolt that secures the arm to the front suspension crossmember must be inserted with its head towards the rear of the vehicle.
