Checking the oil level (BMW 3 Series E36)

The oil level should be checked and, if necessary, topped up approximately every 1000 km. At the same time, oil consumption should not exceed 1.0 liter per 1000 km. Higher consumption is a sign of worn valve seals and/or piston rings, as well as oil channel seals.

• When measuring, the vehicle must be placed on a level surface.
• After turning off the engine, wait at least 3 minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.
• Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth.
• After this, insert the oil dipstick as far as it will go and pull it out again. The oil level should be between both marks on the dipstick.
• Add new oil only when the level approaches the lower mark. The difference between the MIN and MAX marks on the oil dipstick is 1 liter.
• Topping up is done through the filler neck on the cylinder head cover. When topping up, use the recommended grades of oil and do not use additives.
