Introduction to the Operation and Repair Manual (BMW 3 Series E46)

The BMW 3 Series was launched in September 1998. The first models in this series were petrol engines with a displacement of 1.9 (1895 cm³), 2.3 l (2494 cm³) and 2.8 l (2793 cm³). Later, the range of engines was expanded to include 2.2 l (2171 cm³) and 3.0 l (2979 cm³) engines with two overhead camshafts. In March 2001, models with 2.0 litre (1995 cm³) engines and a system "Valvetronic" and with a 1.8 liter engine (1796 cm³). At first, the models were produced only with a sedan body. But then the range of bodies was significantly expanded and now the consumer is offered a wide choice of models that meet his needs both in terms of the car's power output and its trim.

All engines are based on a family of reliable engines that have been installed in many BMW vehicles. 4-cylinder (1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 l) and 6-cylinder (2.2, 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 l) overhead camshaft engines are mounted longitudinally with the transmission mounted on its rear side. The vehicles can be equipped with either manual or automatic transmission.

All models have fully independent front and rear suspension. In addition to the standard equipment, the car can be equipped with optional equipment to suit different tastes and needs. The car can be equipped with a central locking system, electric windows, air conditioning, electric sunroof, anti-lock braking system, traction control system, dynamic stabilization system and various numbers of airbags.
