Introduction to the BMW 7 Series Operation and Repair Manual (BMW 7 Series E38)
Purpose
This Guide has been compiled to help the owner of the vehicle get the most out of it. This task is accomplished in several ways. The data collected and presented below allows the owner of the vehicle to determine what maintenance work should be done and when, and whether it makes sense to try to do it themselves or to contact a representative office of the manufacturer or a car service workshop. The Guide includes descriptions of mandatory routine maintenance and repair procedures for the vehicle, as well as a schedule for their implementation. In addition, information is provided on diagnosing faults in vehicle components and systems (in case of their refusal), as well as ways to eliminate their causes.
Rules for using the Manual
The manual is divided into chapters. Each chapter is divided into numbered sections. Sections, in turn, are divided into subsections and, where necessary, into sub-subsections and consist of paragraphs (also sequentially numbered).
References to illustrations are included in the text of the paragraph/section whose material the illustration is intended to supplement, and are numbered accordingly.
Descriptions of procedures mentioned once in the text are usually not repeated a second time. Instead, if necessary, a reference is made to the corresponding section/subsection of the corresponding chapter where the procedure has already been encountered. References made without mentioning the chapter number refer to the corresponding sections/paragraphs of the current chapter.
References to the position of a component or assembly on the left or right side of the vehicle are taken as facing forward in the driver's seat.
All procedures in this Manual are described in a simple and accessible form. If you strictly follow the instructions in the text and the accompanying illustrations, no difficulties should arise.
Due attention must be paid to the technical requirements and tightening forces for threaded connections given in the specifications at the beginning of each chapter. The specifications must be followed for all work. Within individual sections, the necessary dimensions and values for adjustment are not always given.
The simplest operations, such as "opening the hood" or "loosening the wheel nuts", are taken for granted and are also not always mentioned.
