3rd generation (E38 body) BMW 7 Series sedans were first introduced in May 1994 with the 730i, 740i models with 3.0 and 4.0 liter V8 engines. In September 1994, the 750i was released with a 5.4-liter V12 engine, as well as long versions of the 740i and 750i models. In September 1995, the 728i was launched with a 2.8L 6-cylinder engine. In March 1996, the 735i with a 3.5-liter V8 engine replaced the 730i, and the 740i models were also introduced (with new 4.4L engine, but no power change) and 725tds (with turbo diesel engine 2.5 l). In addition to those listed above, diesel models 730d and 740d were produced. During production (from 1994 to 2002) the equipment of the BMW E38 has changed several times, which led to a variety of modifications of these cars.
The engine is installed longitudinally in the engine compartment. To transmit torque from the engine to the driving rear wheels, a 5- or 6-speed manual transmission was used, or a 5-speed AT with or without the Steptronic system.
Fully independent front wheel suspension consists of beams, MacPherson struts, wishbones and anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is a multi-link design with a subframe and a double elastic final drive suspension. The levers and drive wheels are geometrically arranged in such a way that they, together with rubber mounts, create the effect of joint control of the rear wheels and provide a precisely calculated adjustment of the rear wheel steering angle.
The brakes are equipped with a vacuum booster. Brake mechanisms - disc, standardly installed ABS system.
The BMW E38 is equipped as standard with front airbags for the driver and front passenger, and since July 1997 also with side airbags.
steering type «bolt nut», with hydraulic booster.
