Removal and installation the oil pump (BMW 5 Series E12)
Removal
To access the oil pump, remove the oil sump.
Remove the oil pump drive sprocket, unscrew the pump housing mounting bolts and the pump mounting brackets to the engine block bracket.
Remove the pump, if necessary remove the oil pump drive chain tension adjusting plates installed between the pump bracket and the block.
Installation
Install a new seal between the pump body and the block where the main oil line exits.
Replace the pump drive chain tension adjusting plates, aligning the oil passage holes in the plates with the holes in the main oil line in the engine block.
Secure the pump mounting bracket so that no stress is placed on the pump body.
Make sure the pump drive chain is properly tensioned, so that it deflects slightly when pressed with your thumb. Pump drive chains can be of different lengths (see subsection "Detailed technical specifications").
