General information about transmission overhaul (BMW 5 Series E28)

Overhauling a transmission is a very difficult job for the amateur mechanic. It involves disassembling and reassembling many small parts. Numerous clearances must be accurately measured and, if necessary, adjusted with shims and snap rings. For this reason, we strongly advise the amateur mechanic to do nothing more than what is described in this Chapter and to leave the overhaul to transmission specialists. A rebuilt transmission can be exchanged for a reasonable price, and the cost of overhauling a transmission at home will almost certainly exceed the price of a rebuilt transmission, not to mention the time involved.
