Transmission overhaul is a significant job for an amateur mechanic. It involves disassembly and assembly of many small parts. Numerous gaps must be accurately measured and, if necessary, adjusted using shims and circlips. For this reason, we strongly advise amateur mechanics not to undertake any work other than those described in this Chapter and leave the overhaul to transmission specialists. It is possible to exchange a transmission for a remanufactured one for a reasonable price, and the cost of overhauling a transmission at home will almost certainly exceed the cost of a remanufactured transmission, not to mention the time involved.
