Removal and installation the shift lever (BMW 5 Series E28)

Removal

1. Set the transmission to reverse. Raise the front of the car and place it on stands. Be sure to place chocks under the rear wheels to prevent rolling.

2. Pull the shift lever button up and out of the lever.

3. Remove the lever frame and the sound-absorbing material underneath it.

4. Remove the rubber dust boot. On models with an aluminum shift housing, disconnect the reverse switch connector before removing the boot.



5. Working under the vehicle, disconnect the switch lever (2) from the switch rod (3) by removing the mounting clamp (1).



6. On models with a stamped steel shift housing, remove the retaining ring at the top of the shift lever bearing and remove the lever.



7. On models with an aluminum shift housing, insert two screwdrivers into the grooves of the bearing retaining ring from underneath the lower shift lever bearing. To release the ring, turn it a quarter turn counterclockwise and remove the shift lever.

Installation

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
