Manual Transmission Fault Diagnosis (BMW 5 Series E28)

Symptom Possible cause
Vibrations occur The driveshaft is damaged (see chapter Transmission line).
There is ovality of the tires (see chapter Routine car maintenance).
Wheel balance is disturbed (see Chapters Routine car maintenance and Steering).
The universal joint of the cardan shaft is worn out (see chapter Transmission line).
The transmission, when set to neutral, makes strange noises when the engine is running The clutch release bearing is worn out (see chapter Clutch).
The gearbox input shaft bearing is worn out (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
The transmission makes extraneous noises only in one gear Gears in constant engagement are damaged or worn out.
The synchronizers are damaged or worn out.
The transmission makes extraneous noises in all gears The lubricating fluid level has dropped (see chapter Routine car maintenance).
Bearings are damaged or worn out.
The input shaft and/or output shaft is damaged or worn.
The gearbox "jumps" out of the selected gear The gear shift rod is worn out or its adjustment is impaired (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
The transmission-to-engine mounting bolts have become loose (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
The shift rod is jammed (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)). The shift fork is worn out (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
There are transmission oil leaks There is too much transmission fluid in the gearbox (see Chapters Routine car maintenance and Manual transmission (MT)).
The primary shaft bearing holder is damaged or its fastening has become loose (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
The sealing ring of the primary shaft bearing holder and/or the seal lips are damaged (see chapter Manual transmission (MT)).
