Manual transmission — general information (BMW X5 E53)

On BMW "X5" series vehicles with "E53" body, the power unit uses 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions of the "S5D 280Z" models (with "M54"), "S5D 39Z" (with "M57"), "GS6 37BZ/DZ" (with "M57", "M62" and "N62") and "GS6 53DZ" (with "M57"). These boxes have a manual gear shift drive (RCPD), the lever of which is installed in the middle of the central console. The gearboxes are fully synchronized in all forward gears. The fifth gear is direct, the sixth gear is accelerating. The RCPD is connected through a transfer case with the front and rear axles.
