The oil used is transmission, hypoid. The oil used in a particular manual transmission is color-coded in the form of an orange, yellow or green sticker. The sticker has an inscription «ATF-LT-2» and fixed on the gearbox crankcase (fig.8.1) next to the oil filler screw.
When restoring the oil level and replacing it in the crankcase of the manual transmission, it is necessary to use only certified brands of oils for hypoid gears.
In the absence of a sticker, it is necessary to use BMW oils - nom. No. 81.22.9.407.052, No. 81.22.9.407.053 or No. 81.22.9.407.178.
At low temperatures it is allowed to use single range engine oils «HD» on a mineral basis of the class SAE40-SAE20. In countries with particularly cold climates, automatic transmission oils can be used. The new marking of the manual transmission model in accordance with the BMW Group GS 90007 standard, stands for (For example «GS6 37BZ») in the following way:
- G - gearbox;
- S - mechanical (manual);
- A - automatic;
- 6 - number of steps, six;
- standard for manual transmission;
- 37 - gearbox type, where:
- 26 - gearbox D;
- 31 - gearbox C;
- 37 - gearbox H;
- 39 - gearbox F;
- 53 - gearbox G.
- B - gear block.
- B - for gasoline engines;
- D - for diesel engines.
- Z - gearbox manufacturer:
- Z – ZF (Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen);
- G – Getrag.
The numbers of the manual transmission type correspond to the maximum value of the torque transmitted by the box, so the number 37 corresponds to the maximum value of the transmitted torque - 370 Nm.
Attention! It is strictly forbidden to fill with synthetic motor oils or multi-range motor oils, which can lead to a malfunction of the manual transmission synchronizers.
Before pouring the oil, it must be stirred so that the additives are evenly distributed in its volume.
