- GS6 53DZ – 1.50/1.60 l.
The oil used is transmission oil, hypoid. The oil used in a specific manual transmission has color marking in the form of an orange, yellow or green sticker. The sticker has the inscription "ATF-LT-2" and is attached to the manual transmission housing (Fig. 8.1) next to the threaded plug of the oil filler hole.

When restoring the oil level and replacing it in the manual transmission crankcase, it is necessary to use only certified brands of oils for hypoid gears.
If there is no sticker, it is necessary to use BMW oils – No.81.22.9.407.052, No.81.22.9.407.053 or No.81.22.9.407.178.
At low temperatures, it is permissible to use single-range "HD" motor oils on a mineral base of class SAE40-SAE20. In countries with particularly cold climates, it is possible to use oils for automatic transmissions. The new marking of the manual transmission model in accordance with the BMW Group GS 90007 standard is deciphered (using the example of "GS6 37BZ") as follows:
- G – gearbox;
- S – mechanical (manual);
- A - automatic;
- 6 – number of steps, six;
- standard for manual transmission;
- 37 – gearbox type, where:
- 26 – Gearbox D;
- 31 – gearbox C;
- 37 – gearbox N;
- 39 – gearbox F;
- 53 – gearbox G.
- B – gear block.
- B – for petrol engines;
- D – for diesel engines.
- Z – gearbox manufacturer:
- Z – ZF (Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen);
- G – Getrag.
The numbers of the manual transmission type correspond to the maximum torque value transmitted by the gearbox, so the number 37 corresponds to the maximum transmitted torque value – 370 Nm.
Attention! It is strictly forbidden to fill the transmission with synthetic motor oils or multi-range motor oils, which may lead to malfunction of the manual transmission synchronizers.
Before pouring in the oil, it must be stirred so that the additives are evenly distributed throughout its volume.
