Replacing the secondary shaft seal of the manual transmission (BMW X5 E53)
Manual transmission S5D 280Z
Replacing the oil seal (flange sealing ring) secondary shaft of the S5D 280Z type manual transmission must be carried out in the following order. Prepare the devices "00.2.030", "00.5.010", "23.0.130", "23.0.140", "23.0.190". "23.0.250" and "23.2.320", disconnect the propeller shaft from the manual transmission and hang it from the body on wire brackets. Support the manual transmission with an assembly of devices (see fig. 8.5) and remove the transfer case.

Place the "23.0.250" tool on the secondary shaft flange and, using the "23.2.320" tool (Fig. 8.9), unscrew the flange nut.

Using a three-jaw puller (Fig. 8.10), remove the flange (1) from the secondary shaft of the manual transmission. Using the "00.5.010" tool (Fig. 8.11), remove the sealing ring (1, gland) from the secondary shaft of the manual transmission.

Lubricate the working edges of the new sealing ring (1, Fig. 8.12) transmission oil and, using the "23.0.190" device, press in the new sealing ring until it stops. When pressing in, use a mallet or a hammer with a plastic striker.

Heat the secondary shaft flange to 80°C and place it on the secondary shaft. Apply a locking compound such as Loctite 243 to the flange nut and tighten the secondary shaft flange nut in three steps:
- 1st step, tighten to 170 Nm (17.0 kgf·m);
- 2nd step, loosen the nut;
- 3rd step, tighten to 130 Nm (13.0 kgf·m).
After completing the work, replace the oil in the gearbox.
Manual transmission S5D 39Z
The replacement of the secondary shaft flange sealing ring of the S5D 39Z manual transmission should be carried out in a similar order, while tightening the flange nut of the secondary shaft in three steps:
- 1st step, tighten to 200 Nm (20.0 kgf·m);
- 2nd step, loosen the nut;
- Step 3: Tighten to 145 Nm (14.5 kgf·m).
