Replacing the gear selector rod sleeve (BMW X5 E53)

The replacement of the gear selector rod sleeve must be carried out in the following order: Remove the gearbox and the locking bracket (11, see Fig. 8.16) from the gearbox drive rod (10). Remove the gearbox drive rod from the housing (12) of the gear selection rod and remove the washers – 2 pcs.



Hook the spring ring (1, see Fig. 8.17), installed in the groove of the rod collar, move it back a little to free access to the pin (2). Press up (or down) the cylindrical pin (2) from the gear selection rod collar and remove the collar. Replace the spring ring (1).



When installing the rod sleeve, check and, if necessary, replace the plastic washer (14, see Fig. 8.16) in the cage (12) of the gear selection rod.

Lubricate the spherical part of the gear selector rod and the pin of the gear shift drive with grease of the type "Circolight" or plastic grease such as "Kluber Polylub GLY 801". The washers must fit against the gear selector rod housing with their larger surface.
