Replacing the transmission cross beam (BMW X5 E53)

The design of the "S5D…Z" manual transmission housing is shown in Figure 8.31, and the manual transmission support beam is shown in Figure 8.3. The manual transmission cross beam should be replaced in the following order. Remove the exhaust system, left and right heat-insulating screens, and support the manual transmission with a hydraulic jack to prevent it from shifting.

Unscrew the nut (5, see Fig. 8.3) and remove the bolt (4), when unscrewing hold the bolt with a wrench and rotate only the nut. Unscrew the bolts (6) on the left and right sides and remove the cross beam for mounting the manual transmission on the body.

When installing, tighten the M10 bolts (6 pcs.) securing the beam to a torque of 41 N·m (4.1 kgf·m). Tighten the nut of the rubber-metal hinge bolt (3) to a torque of 74 N·m (7.4 kgf·m), while rotating the nut, holding the bolt head with a wrench.
