Cylinder head assembly (BMW 3 Series E21)

Install the valves, having previously lubricated the valve guides and stems with engine oil.

Before pressing the valve stem seals onto the valve guides, install protective plastic sleeves on the valve stem cracker grooves or seal them with adhesive tape to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces of the valve stem edges.

Press the oil deflector caps onto the valve guide bushings using tool 11 1 140.



Install the valve spring retaining plates, then install the valve springs, directing their closely spaced coils toward the cylinder head.

Using tool 111060 to compress the springs, install the crackers and upper valve plates.

Install the rocker arm shafts so that the oil holes in them face the valve guides and the grooves for the guide flange face the inside of the engine.

Insert the rocker arm spring retainers into the rocker arm shaft grooves.



Install the rocker arm axle guide flange and close the axle holes with plugs.
