Removal and installation the engine (BMW 3 Series E21)
Removal
Remove the gearbox.
Place alignment marks on the hood hinges and remove the hood.
Remove the air filter housing, radiator and distribution tank.
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
On cars with carburetor engines
Disconnect the fuel lines and rod from the throttle control sector.
Disconnect the coolant hoses and vacuum hoses.
On vehicles with fuel injection engines
Remove the air supply casing.
Disconnect the fuel lines.
Remove the fuel line bracket located next to the air flow meter.
On vehicles with a fuel injected engine, disconnect the linkage from the throttle control lever, and on vehicles with carbureted engines, disconnect the linkage from the throttle control sector, then remove the linkage from the intermediate support.
Disconnect the coolant hoses and vacuum hoses.
On all cars
Remove the protective cover and disconnect the ignition switch plug.
Disconnect the pads from the additional resistance of the ignition coil.
Disconnect the multi-pin connector of the fuse box and remove the wire bundle from the holders on the fender splash guard.
Start the engine.
Disconnect the ground jumper located next to the ignition coil.
Remove the left and right engine mount brackets.
Engine Mount Brackets:
1 - left suspension bracket; 2 — right suspension bracket; 3 - supports.
Raise the engine and remove it from the engine compartment.
Installation
Place the engine on the supports and tighten the support pad mounting bolts.
Connect a jumper wire to ground near the ignition coil.
Connect the multi-pin connector of the mounting block.
Connect the pads to the additional ignition coil resistor and to the ignition system switch.
Connect the coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and fuel lines in the reverse order of engine removal.
On vehicles with a fuel-injected engine, attach the throttle control rod to the lever. On vehicles with carburetor engines, attach the thrust to the throttle control section.
Install the expansion tank and radiator.
Install the air filter housing.
Put the hood back in place, install the hinges in accordance with the marks made when removing the engine. If necessary, adjust the position of the hood so that it has the same gaps with the right and left wings.
Install the gearbox.
Connect the wires to the battery terminals.
