Withdrawal
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals, drain the liquid from the cooling system by unscrewing the drain plugs on the radiator and cylinder block.
Disconnect pipelines, hoses and electrical wires, as indicated in subsection «Removing the cylinder head».
Remove a radiator of system of cooling.
Disconnect and remove the starter positive power cable from the mounting eye.
Disconnect the ground wire from the cylinder block.
Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the bulkhead.
On models «525» And «528» remove the expansion tank.
Disconnect the throttle control rod (by car model «518* First Series Disconnect Choke Cable).
Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump.
Disconnect the bundle of connecting wires from the fuse box on the casing of the left front wheel.
Disconnect the high and low voltage wires from the ignition coil.
On models «525» And «528» remove the ignition distributor cap, ignition distributor rotor and protective washer.
On models with power steering, remove the power steering pump.
Loosen the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine block
Hang a traverse with an index on the hoist «6000» for 4-cylinder engines and «7000» for 6-cylinder engines and sling the engine.
Turn away nuts of the top fastening of the right and left arms of a suspension bracket of the engine.
Move the engine forward, lift it up, turn the front end to the left and remove the engine from the engine compartment.
Installation
Engine installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- when installing the engine in the engine compartment, its rear part should be slightly inclined towards the gearbox housing, and its front part should be directed towards the left side of the car;
- if there are difficulties when installing the front end of the input shaft of the gearbox into the splines of the clutch driven disk, jack up one of the rear wheels of the car and, with the gear engaged, turn the wheel until the splines of the shaft and the disk coincide;
- first tighten the bolts of the gearbox to the engine, then the nuts of the fastening to the front (left and right) suspension mounts;
- after installing the engine, fill the cooling system with liquid and remove air from it (cm. «Cooling system»).
From model year 1978 removal and installation of BMW engines «525», «528» And «528i» produced according to the following:
- on engines with fuel injection, when removing the engine, disconnect the wires from the ignition coil and additional resistor. Open the glove box, depress the fastening spring, undock the connector of the electronic control unit, disconnect the wire and remove the bundle of wires forward through the holes provided for this;
- on vehicles with power steering, first unscrew the rear bolts of the power steering pump, then the front bolts of its fastening. Do not disconnect hoses from the pump;
- on models with air conditioning, remove the compressor and hang it to the body with a wire without disconnecting the hoses;
- when installing an engine with fuel injection, install the clamp at the outlet of the air filter so that the fastening screw is on the side of the throttle switch;
- when installing the motor, connect the black/red wire to the terminal «15» ignition coils, and the black wire to the terminal «1»;
- connect the wires to the additional resistor as follows: green and black-red wires are connected to the 0.4 ohm resistor; a black-red wire is connected to a 0.6 ohm resistor;
- when connecting the interior heater hoses, the hose coming from the cylinder head must be at the bottom.
