Removal and installation the engine (BMW 5 Series E12)
Removal
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals, drain the liquid from the cooling system by unscrewing the drain plugs on the radiator and cylinder block.
Disconnect pipes, hoses and electrical wires as specified in the subsection "Removal the cylinder head".
Remove the cooling system radiator.
Disconnect and remove the positive starter power cable from the mounting eye.
Disconnect the ground wire from the cylinder block.
Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the front shield.
On models "525" and "528" remove the expansion tank.
Disconnect the throttle control rod (on the first series 518, disconnect the air damper drive cable).
Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump.
Disconnect the harness connector from the fuse box on the left front wheel housing.
Disconnect the high and low voltage wires from the ignition coil.
On models "525" and "528", remove the distributor cap, distributor rotor and shield.
On models with power steering, remove the power steering pump.
Loosen the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine block
Hang the crossbar with the index "6000" for 4-cylinder engines and "7000" for 6-cylinder engines on the hoist and sling the engine.

Loosen the nuts of the upper fastening of the right and left engine mount brackets.
Move the engine forward, lift it up, turn the front part to the left and remove the engine from the engine compartment.
Installation
The engine is installed in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- when installing the engine in the engine compartment, its rear part should be slightly inclined towards the gearbox housing, and its front part should be directed towards the left side of the car;
- if difficulties arise when installing the front end of the gearbox input shaft into the splines of the driven clutch disc, jack up one of the rear wheels of the car and, with the gear engaged, turn the wheel until the splines of the shaft and disc align;
- first tighten the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, then the nuts securing it to the front (left and right) suspension supports;
- after installing the engine, fill the cooling system with liquid and bleed air from it (see "Cooling system").
Since model year 1978 removal and installation of BMW engines "525", "528" and "528i" are produced taking into account the following:
- on fuel-injected engines, when removing the engine, disconnect the wires from the ignition coil and the booster resistor. Open the glove compartment, press the retaining spring, disconnect the ECU connector, disconnect the wire and pull the wire bundle forward through the holes provided for this purpose;
- on vehicles with power steering, first unscrew the rear power steering pump mounting bolts, then the front mounting bolts. Do not disconnect the hoses from the pump;
- on models with air conditioning, remove the compressor and hang it from the body with wire without disconnecting the hoses;
- when installing a fuel injected engine, install the clamp on the air cleaner outlet so that the mounting screw is on the throttle switch side;
- when installing the engine, connect the black and red wire to terminal "15" of the ignition coil, and the black wire to terminal "1";
- connect the wires to the additional resistor as follows: connect the green and black-red wires to the 0.4 Ohm resistor; a black and red wire is connected to a 0.6 Ohm resistor;
- when connecting the interior heater hoses, the hose coming from the cylinder head should be located at the bottom.
