Bleeding the hydraulic clutch drive (BMW 3 Series E36)

            0

Bleeding the hydraulic clutch drive should be done if the pressed clutch pedal does not return or returns slowly to its original position, gears are difficult to engage, or if the hydraulic system has opened.

Since the hydraulic clutch drive operates on brake fluid, before carrying out work, you should read the section "Bleeding the brake system".

Note: When bleeding the air in this way, some air may remain in the system. This can be recognized by a grinding noise and incomplete release of the clutch. Therefore, it is necessary to bleed the air at a service station.

Raise the front of the car.

Raise the front of the car.

Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank "1" and, if necessary, top up the fluid to the MAX mark.

Remove the cap from the air release valve "3" on the clutch slave cylinder.

Place the clear hose onto the air release valve of the slave cylinder.

Carefully ensure that the air release valves can be turned easily. Use a spanner to loosen them so as not to damage the hexagon of the head.

Place the free end of the hose in a container with brake fluid to prevent air from being sucked in during the air removal process.

Press the clutch pedal "2" about 10 times until it stops and leave it pressed.

In this position, open the air release valve "3", brake fluid flows out. Close the air release valve when brake fluid starts to flow out, not containing air bubbles.

Attention: The brake fluid level in the reservoir should not drop; if necessary, add fresh brake fluid to the reservoir.

Release the clutch pedal and press it again about 10 times, leaving it pressed. Repeat this process until all air bubbles in the hose disappear. At the same time, constantly add fresh brake fluid to the reservoir.

Close the air release valve on the clutch slave cylinder. Remove the hose and put on the protective cap.

Lower the car.

Add brake fluid to the expansion tank up to the MAX mark.

Check the functioning of the clutch and brake system.

Removal air using a special installation

At service stations, air is usually removed from the hydraulic clutch drive using a special installation. The installation applies pressure to the brake fluid.

Unscrew the cap of the expansion tank with brake fluid. Remove the float.

Connect the unit according to the operating instructions.

Attach the hose to the clutch slave cylinder air release valve. Place the end of the hose in a bottle of brake fluid.

Keep the air release valve open until the air bubbles stop escaping, while pressing the clutch pedal several times.

If there is air in the hydraulic system after repeated bleeding, the slave cylinder must be removed from the gearbox.

With the hydraulic system connected, push the piston pusher into the cylinder until it stops. This allows residual air to escape through the expansion tank and achieves maximum clutch release travel

Caution: When the slave cylinder is removed, do not press the clutch pedal.

Insert the float into the expansion tank. Add brake fluid to the expansion tank up to the max mark. Screw on the expansion tank cap.
