Rear Anti-Roll Bar — Removal and Installation (BMW 3 Series E46)

Note: You will need new anti-roll bar bracket and eye nuts for installation.

Removal

1. Support the front wheels. Raise the rear of the vehicle and place it on supports (see "Lifting and installing the car on supports"). To improve access to the components, remove both rear wheels.

2. Unscrew the nuts securing each earring to the upper suspension arms (Fig. 16.2).



3. Apply marks to align the support bushings and the stabilizer rod. Then loosen the nuts of the stabilizer support tie bolts (Fig. 16.3).



4. Disconnect the supports from the subframe and pull the stabilizer with the earrings out from under the car. Remove the earrings and rubber bushings from the stabilizer.

5. Carefully inspect the stabilizer components for wear or damage, paying particular attention to the support bushings. Replace any faulty components if necessary.

Installation

6. Place the bushings on the stabilizer and align them with the marks made before removal. Turn the bushings so that their flats are facing forward.

7. Lift the stabilizer and install it in place. Connect the earrings to the upper arms, screw on new nuts and tighten them securely.

8. Install the stabilizer mounts. Make sure that their projections engage with the subframe. Insert the bolts and screw on new nuts. Make sure that the marks on the bushings and stabilizer are aligned, then tighten the mount nuts securely.

9. Install the wheels, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque.
