Indication of outside temperature and time (BMW 5 Series E28)

In addition to the time, you can display the date and outside temperature, and use the reminder key (Memo) to activate the hourly audible reminder signal.
When the ignition key is turned to position 0 and the corresponding button is pressed, the time and date can be read. From the moment the ignition key is turned to position 1, the time is displayed. Numerical data can be changed or re-entered.
Entering time and date
After a power outage (first input, flashing dot on display) time can be entered without pressing the UHR key using two input keys h/DAT and min/DAT. To enter the date, first press the DATUM key. When pressing the information input keys or holding them in this position for every half second, the corresponding numerical value increases by one unit.
The time function is indicated by the hour symbol, and the date by the letters DAT.
To start the clock with an accuracy of up to a second, press the UHR button, and to start the calendar program, press the DATUM key.
After this, the dot stops blinking.
Before entering any changed numerical data, press the corresponding key (UHR or DATUM) and hold it in this position until a flashing dot appears on the display between the hours and minutes or the day and month.
If after entering new numerical data you do not start the program, but press another key, the old numerical data is saved.
Unreal digital data is not accepted by the program. When indicating the date, leap years are not taken into account and must be entered manually.
Recommendations for displaying time in 12-hour mode
The up-to-noon (AM) time symbol changes to the midday (PM) time symbol after every 12 hours and is indicated before its numeric value. The following changes can be made to the time function for different versions:
- 24 hours or C
- 12 h or F
- 12 h or C-indication (see buttons on the back cover of the case).
After switching from the 24-hour to the 12-hour system, the function of the input keys automatically changes from day and month to month and day.
Sound reminder function (Memo)
The MEMO reminder key can be used to switch the hourly reminder signal on and off. The signal sounds 15 seconds before each full hour and reminds you, for example, when the tape recorder is running, to switch on the radio to listen to the latest news. The ME combination on the display indicates that the reminder function is activated.
Outside temperature
When the A-TEMP button is pressed, the outside temperature is displayed. If the outside temperature drops below 3°C, a warning signal sounds when the ignition key is in position 1. At the same time, the dot and the temperature unit (C/F) flash on the display for 10 seconds.
If another function is activated at this point and the temperature is then requested again, only the optical warning signal flashes for the remaining time.
The warning signal is repeated if, since the last time it occurred, the temperature has increased to 6°C at least once and dropped back to 3°C.
The low outside temperature warning signal does not exclude the possibility of icy conditions at temperatures above 3°C, for example on bridges and roadways in the shade.
