When driving in winter, the tires' grip on the road is significantly reduced, so the driver must take into account a longer braking distance in every situation.
Before the onset of cold weather, it is advisable to prepare your car for winter use at a BMW service center.
Follow the appropriate oil change instructions and change your oil before cold weather sets in, if possible.
For manual and automatic transmissions, rear axle final drive, hydraulic steering, brake system and ride height control system, no preparatory measures are required, except for checking the oil level.
The standard supply includes the addition of a long-lasting antifreeze with anti-corrosion properties to the coolant. The concentration required to ensure anti-corrosion protection should be 40% throughout the year, which corresponds to frost resistance of approx. -27°C.
Use only approved long-life antifreezes that do not contain nitrites and amines. These products are known at BMW service centers.
The coolant should be replaced every two years. Before the onset of cold weather and during the cold season, check the frost resistance of the coolant. At the same time, check the cooling system for leaks and, if necessary, replace cracked and hardened hoses.
The engine temperature is regulated automatically via the thermostat depending on the engine load and outside temperature. Therefore, do not cover the radiator.
A well-charged battery is a prerequisite for reliable engine starting. In cold weather, its capacity is lower and the load on it is higher than in summer.
Use only approved lock care products*.
They also prevent them from freezing. If, despite all precautions or due to a defect in the door lock heating system, it freezes, it can be defrosted with a heated key. Do not use any de-icers - they promote degreasing and reduce the operational reliability of the locks.
To prevent freezing, rubber parts - door, hood and trunk lid seals - should be treated with a special product for the care of rubber seals* or silicone aerosol*.
Car paintwork, as well as chrome and polished parts before the onset of cold weather, as well as during the winter months, they must be preserved using appropriate means*.
