When driving in winter, the grip of the tires on the road deteriorates significantly, so the driver must take into account a longer braking distance in every situation.
Before the onset of cold weather, it is advisable to prepare the car for winter operation at a BMW service.
Follow the appropriate instructions for changing the oil and do it before the onset of cold weather if possible.
For manual and automatic transmissions, rear axle final drive, hydraulic steering, brake system and ride height control, no preparations are required, with the exception of checking the oil level.
The standard delivery includes the addition of a long-lasting antifreeze with anti-corrosion properties to the coolant. The concentration required to ensure anti-corrosion protection should be 40% throughout the year, which corresponds to a frost resistance of approx. -27°C.
Only use approved long-life antifreezes that do not contain nitrites and amines. These funds are known at the BMW service.
The coolant must be changed every two years. Before the onset of cold weather and during the cold season, check the frost resistance of the coolant. At the same time, check the cooling system for leaks and, if necessary, replace cracked and hardened hoses.
The temperature control of the engine via the thermostat takes place automatically depending on the load on the engine and the outside temperature. Therefore, do not cover the radiator.
A well-charged battery is a prerequisite for a reliable engine start. In cold weather, its capacity is lower, and the load on it is higher than in summer.
Use only approved care products* for locks.
They also prevent them from freezing. If, despite all precautions or due to a defect in the heating system of the door lock, it freezes, it can be thawed by heating it in front of this key. Do not use any deicers - they contribute to degreasing and reduce the operational reliability of the locks.
To prevent freezing, rubber parts - seals of doors, hood and trunk lid should be treated with a special agent for caring for rubber seals * or silicone spray *.
Vehicle paintwork, as well as chrome and polished parts before the onset of cold weather, as well as in the winter months, should be preserved with appropriate means *.
