Replacing the coolant (BMW 5 Series E34)

            0

The coolant must be replaced as part of the maintenance schedule every 2 years. The following tools are required:
  • Jack and stands.
  • A vessel for draining coolant.

The following wearing parts and consumables are required:
  • For topping up - even in warm weather - use only a mixture of antifreeze concentrate and lime-free clean water. It is better to use distilled water to avoid deposits. Use only antifreeze recommended by BMW.

Note: To continue driving, you can also, especially in summer, fill it with clean water. However, at the earliest opportunity, you should adjust the concentration of the composition with antifreeze.

The drain plug on the engine block requires an aluminum gasket measuring A12x15.5.

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Set the heater switch in the passenger compartment to maximum heating power.

Turn the cooling system cap slightly to the left and release the pressure in the system. Then unscrew the cap.

Caution: When the engine is hot, open the cap carefully. Risk of injury! Place a rag when opening. If possible, open the cap when the coolant temperature is below +90°C.

Raise the front of the car.

If available, remove the cover under the radiator.

Place a container under the engine and open the drain plug "arrow" on the engine block. The plug is located under the exhaust manifold.

Drain the coolant completely.

Warning: Coolant is poisonous and should not be simply poured out or thrown away with household garbage. The address of the nearest waste collection point can be found in the city or village administration.

When draining liquid during repair work, it should be drained into a container for further use.

Screw the plug into the engine block with a new gasket and tighten to a torque of 50 Nm.

Lightly tighten the drain plug on the radiator. To do this, insert a coin into the slot and tighten it by hand.
