Removal and installation the rear shelf (BMW 5 Series E39)
Removal
Note: This describes how to remove the rear shelf if you have a retractable rear window blind.
Press both C-pillar trims at the top and unfasten them from the two pin clamps.
Disconnect the interior light plug and put the cover and light aside.
Unscrew the seat belt mounting bolts at the bottom.
Remove the backrest of the rear seat. If there is a folding mechanism, fold the backrest forward.

From the luggage compartment side, unscrew the 3 nuts securing the retractable rear window curtain. First mark the mounting position of the nuts by tracing the washers located underneath them with a felt-tip pen.
On the right side of the passenger compartment, disconnect the plug connector of the retractable curtain drive.
Remove the outer headrests. To do this, pull the headrests up completely and, lightly pressing the rods forward and backward, pull them out with an upward movement.
Method 2:
- Unfasten the headrest pads. To do this, pull the pads upwards from the back, then diagonally back upwards, thereby releasing them from the front.
- Unlock the head restraints and move them upwards. To do this, use your finger to feel the locking lever through the hole in the rear shelf and, overcoming the force of the spring, move it forward. The locking lever is located on the inside of the outer guide rod.
Unscrew the fastening of the middle headrest base.
Remove the seat belt pads from the rear shelf and remove them together with the belts.
Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the plastic screws and detach the rear shelf from the four spacer clips.
Note: If the folding mechanism is present, 6 spacer clamps are installed.
Pull the rear shelf forward a little. At the same time, the assistant should press upwards through the holes of the bolts (studs) of the rear shelf from the luggage compartment. Acting from the cabin through the side holes in the to the lever of the rolling curtain behind the window glass and lifting it up, at the same time pull the cover forward. At the same time, the fingers of the fastening of the rolling curtain move through the resonance boxes of the speakers.
Note: Otherwise the pins will not allow the rear shelf to be pulled forward.
Installation
Insert the rear shelf and move it back. The 4 pins in the rear part of the shelf should enter the body guides.
From the luggage compartment side, screw on 3 nuts with washers, installing them in the position marked before removal, and tighten the nuts to a torque of 6 Nm.
Insert 4 or 6 spacer clamps respectively and screw in the plastic screws.
Place the seat belts with pads in the rear shelf and secure the pads.
Screw the base for the middle headrest.
If removed, secure the headrest pads.
Insert and secure the outer headrests.
Connect the plug connector of the rear window retractable blind drive.
Install or fold back the rear seat back accordingly.

Screw on the seat belt mounting plate "4" using the washer "2" and the hexagon head bolt "1". Tighten the bolt to a torque of 50 Nm.
Note: Protrusion "3" must be positioned on top during installation.
Connect the plug connector of the interior light, secure the C-pillar trims.
