BMW 5 Series Service Chart (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

The service intervals of BMW 5 Series vehicles depend on the operating conditions and are communicated to the driver by the service interval indicator. The service interval indicator has five green, one yellow and one red light-emitting diode (LED). In addition, the Oilservice message may be displayed (lubrication system maintenance), Inspektion (maintenance), and also the symbol of the clock (for urgent replacement of brake fluid). The less the green LEDs light after the ignition is turned on, the closer the next service is due. If the yellow LED lights up together with one of the two messages, the corresponding service must be carried out urgently. It is necessary to distinguish between lubrication system maintenance and maintenance 1 or 2. Maintenance 2 is carried out simultaneously with every other maintenance 1. If the maintenance is not carried out within the specified period, the red LED lights up.

The criteria for calculating the microprocessor service cycles are, along with the vehicle mileage, also the operating conditions, such as short or long distance trips or the driver's driving style. The scope of work for the said maintenance is given in the service book.

The service interval indicator display is erased at the workshop after an oil change or maintenance. An expensive electronic tool, sold through BMW workshops, is required to erase the display. However, authorized BMW workshops are obliged to reset the display intervals to their original position free of charge upon request, even if the service was performed independently.

Those who do not want to follow the BMW interval indicator can perform maintenance or service according to the intervals given below. In this case, the "Maintenance" given here corresponds to the maintenance of a BMW vehicle with an engine oil change, and the "Service" given corresponds to maintenance 1. At the end of the maintenance chart, there are rarely performed maintenance items 2.

Note: To ensure optimum engine operation, it is recommended to visit a BMW service station and have the fault code memory interrogated there as part of the exhaust emission measurement. Malfunctions may occur unnoticed in the engine management, which are automatically ignored when switching to the backup program. As a result, the engine does not operate under optimum conditions (has increased fuel consumption). By interrogating the fault code memory device, such faults are easily identified.
