Towing Rules
Switch on the ignition to unlock the steering wheel so that the direction indicators, alarm and, if necessary, the windshield wipers can function.
Put the gearshift lever in neutral position. On vehicles with automatic transmission, move the mode selector to position N.
Turn on the hazard warning lights on the towed and towed vehicles.
Since the brake booster and power steering only work when the engine is running, on vehicles with the engine not running, the brake pedal and steering wheel must be actuated more strongly
It is recommended to use a towing bar for towing. When using a tow rope, there is a high risk of collision with the towing vehicle. The tow rope must be elastic in order to have a gentle effect on both the towed and the towing vehicle. Only use rope made of synthetic material or with elastic intermediate links.
Features of towing a car with an automatic transmission
The operating mode selector must be in position N.
- Maximum towing speed: 70 km/h!
- Maximum towing distance: 150 km!
If the transmission is defective, the towing speed is high, or when towing long distances, the drive wheels of the towed vehicle must be raised. Cause: When the engine is not running, the gearbox oil pump is not working, so the gearbox will not be sufficiently lubricated for a long time at high speeds.
When using a tow truck: the vehicle should only be towed with the drive wheels raised.
Starting the engine by towing
It is not possible to start a vehicle with an automatic transmission by towing.
Caution: Only start a cold engine by towing, otherwise there is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter.
Turn on the ignition.
Press the accelerator pedal.
Disengage the clutch and hold the clutch pedal depressed, engage 3rd gear.
Vehicle towed or pushed.
Release the clutch pedal slowly.
