When I finished my apprenticeship as an auto mechanic in the early sixties, all mechanics had the adjustment data for all car models in their heads. There was no factory documentation for the different car models. The engine idle speed was adjusted by ear. A simple light bulb was used to adjust the ignition, and a torque wrench was used only when the cylinder head bolts needed tightening.
Today, such methods of work are unthinkable. Even a qualified specialist cannot do anything without modern control and adjustment devices. In addition, if he wants to do the work correctly, he must constantly improve his technical knowledge by familiarizing himself with the factory documentation. And what is self-evident for a specialist should become a matter of course for an amateur. Even the smallest errors in adjustment can cause serious damage. Therefore, before carrying out any repair work on a BMW, it is recommended to look at this book. This is also necessary in order to assess the scope of repairs and the degree of complexity of the work before starting work.
Most threaded connections are specified with a tightening torque. When tightening some threaded connections, (cylinder head, suspension joints, etc.) it is imperative to use a torque wrench.
The book provides the technically competent car enthusiast with the necessary basics for the correct independent performance of work on a BMW. A detailed description of all work operations is given, large photos of the general view and details allow a clear idea of the work process. For reasons of space, only a detailed description of a four-cylinder engine is given. However, for six-cylinder engines, all the most important data on maintenance and adjustments are given, such as engine oil capacity, spark plug parameters, etc.
Each chapter of the book has a section containing a description of car maintenance work, which will allow the car enthusiast to perform this work correctly and quickly. In addition, the diagnostic and troubleshooting tables provided in each chapter allow you to localize and quickly find a possible source of the malfunction.
Even an experienced car enthusiast should not forget that in order to monitor and maintain the operational safety of the car, it is advisable to regularly visit a BMW service station.
Naturally, this book cannot deal in detail with every specific technical issue. However, I hope that a properly made selection of instructions for repair, maintenance and care of the car will in most cases provide a solution to the problems that arise.
