Removal and installation steering (BMW 3 Series E21)

Removal



Remove the cotter pins and unscrew the crown nuts of the ball joint pins of the steering rods.

Disconnect the steering rods from the steering knuckles by pressing out the ball joint pins from the latter using tool 31 1 110.

Loosen the bolts securing the steering gear housing to the front axle bracket.

Loosen the bolts securing the steering gear housing to the front axle bracket.


After unscrewing the nut, remove the bolt securing the cardan joint of the lower steering shaft to the drive pinion shaft.

Remove the steering gear assembly with rods.

Installation



Install the steering gear on the vehicle.

Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.

Make sure that the mark on the drive pinion boot is between the marks on the steering gear housing.

Without changing the position of the pinion and steering gear housing, connect the steering shaft to the drive pinion shaft by inserting the universal joint mounting bolt and tightening the new self-locking nut.



Tighten the new self-locking nuts on the steering gear housing bolts to the front axle bracket.

Attach the steering rods to the steering knuckles, tighten and cotter pin the ball joint pin nuts. Tighten the new self-locking steering shock absorber mounting nuts.

Check the front wheel alignment angles.
