Power supply system characteristics (BMW 3 Series E21)
Fuel tank
The fuel tank is stamped from sheet steel and is mounted in front of the rear axle.
Fuel tank capacity, l: 52.
Note: Since 1978, vehicles have been equipped with a two-section fuel tank with a capacity of 58 liters.
Fuel pump
On cars with carburetor engines, a mechanical diaphragm fuel pump of a different type is installed, driven by a pusher.
Brand: Pierburg.
Type: PE 15615.
Static pressure with closed needle valve, at crankshaft speed of 4000 rpm, kg/cm²: 0.30.
Pump performance at crankshaft speed of 4000 rpm, l/h, not less than: 55.
Pusher length, mm: 88.2±0.1.
Pusher outer diameter, mm: 8-0,080-0,102.
Thickness of thermal insulation spacer, mm: 20.
Note: Beginning with the 1981 model year, the 316 was equipped with a new fuel pump design.
Cars with fuel injected engines
"318i"
This model uses a specially designed electric fuel pump.
Pump brand: Bosch.
Fuel supply pressure, kg/cm²: 4.7.
Pump capacity, l/h: 120.
Brand and type of drain valve: Pierburg PE 20 103.
"320"
This model is equipped with an electric multi-section roller fuel pump.
Pump brand and type: Bosch 0580 254 992.
Fuel supply pressure, kg/cm²: 5.0.
Pump capacity, l/h: 110.
Nominal voltage, V: 12.
Operating voltage, V: 7-15.
Current consumption, A, no more than: 4.7.
Air filter
Air filter - with replaceable dry filter element.
Brand and type: "315", "316", "318", "320": Purolator RM 1137, Mann C 3260; "318": Putorator AF 3087; "320i": Pulorator PM 1645.
Frequency of replacement of the filter element: every 15 thousand km of run (or more often when operating in conditions of increased air dustiness).
Carburetor
On engines of the "316" models (up to 1980 model year), "318" and "320" are equipped with a Solex DIDTA 32/32 emulsion type carburetor, two-chamber, with an automatic mixed type starting device, which uses a bimetallic spring with electrical heating and circulation of heated liquid from the engine cooling system.

Solenoid shut-off valve
Brand: Pierburg.
Type: "316", "318": ZK 12 971/45; "320": ZK 12 971/47,5.
Nominal voltage. V: 12.
Maximum allowable voltage, V: 16.5.
Current consumption at terminal voltage of 12 V, A, no more than: 0.13.
Since the beginning of the series production, the engine of the model "315" has been equipped with a Solex IB2 emulsion type, single-chamber carburetor.

Solenoid shut-off valve
Make and type: Pierburg 7 20580 00.
Nominal voltage, V: 12.
Since the 1981 model year, the engine of the "316" model cars has been equipped with a Solex "Zenit" 2B4 emulsion carburetor, two-chamber, with sequential opening of the throttle valves. The carburetor has a fuel drain system into the fuel tank, a pneumatic drive of the 2nd chamber throttle valve, a piston accelerator pump, a partial load economizer, an automatic starting device with a pneumatic drive of the air damper and an auxiliary starting device (to start a warm engine). At forced idle speed, the forced idle economizer is activated.

Fuel injection system
The engines of the 318i and 320i models are equipped with the K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection system from Bosch.
Thermal valve for reducing toxicity of exhaust gases (on "320i")
Brand And type: Texas Instrument CARP or Pierburg PE 20213. Valve opening temperature, °C: 30±3.
Valve closing temperature, °C: 20±3.
