Removal and installation the handbrake cable (BMW 3 Series E36)
Removal
Unscrew the handbrake cables from the handbrake lever.
Raise the car.
Remove the exhaust system heat shield.
Pull the handbrake cables out of the guides under the bottom of the car.
Rear disc brakes
Remove the parking brake shoes.

Remove the handbrake shoe spacer lock by pressing pin "1" to do this.
Unscrew the support of the handbrake cable braid by unscrewing bolts "2".
Disconnect the handbrake cable from the rear axle trailing arm and pull the cable out of the protective tube.
Installation
Route the cable to the handbrake lever and to the rear wheel brake.
Attention: When installing in the protective case, take into account that the support for the cable braiding is adjacent to the tube.
Connect the handbrake cable to the rear axle trailing arm using a plastic clamp.

Insert the cable support and secure it with 2 bolts "2" on the brake shield.
Assemble the drum brake.
Rear drum brakes
Remove the brake drum.
Disconnect the upper return spring (Figure W 44149, item "8").
Slightly lift the brake shoe from the support and disconnect the cable from the brake lever.

Use pliers to squeeze the locking clip "1" and pull the handbrake cable out of the brake shield "2".
Installation
Route the handbrake cable to the handbrake lever and to the brake shield.
Insert the handbrake cable with the locking bracket into the brake shield. Ensure the correct position of the locking bracket.
Secure the handbrake cable to the trailing arm.
Assemble the drum brake.
Pull the handbrake cable through the guides in the passenger compartment. When inserting the cables, the handbrake lever must be in the released position.
Manually tighten the handbrake cable nuts onto the handbrake lever.
Install the exhaust system heat shield.
Attach the cables to the lever.
Adjust the handbrake.
