Removal and installation the light switch (BMW 3 Series E36)
Removal, all models except Compact
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".
Remove the driver's side footwell trim.

Cover the rotary handle "1" with adhesive tape and remove.

Unscrew nut "2".
Press the switch against the dashboard and pull it down.
Disconnect the connector after first unscrewing the plastic union nut.
Installation
Insert and secure the connector with a plastic union nut.
Insert it into the light hole from behind. The cutout in the switch should fit into the ledge at the bottom of the trim.
Tighten the fastening nut.
Put on the rotary handle after removing the adhesive tape.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Attention: Connect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the electronic control unit of the injection device may be damaged.
Check the operation of the light switch.
Set the time on the clock.
Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
Install the driver's side footwell trim.
Removal, Compact model
Remove the instrument panel.
Press the light switch from the rear inside the dashboard. Disconnect the connector.
Installation is carried out in reverse order.
