Removal and installation the turn signal switch and windshield wiper (BMW 3 Series E36)
The turn signal and windshield wiper switches are called steering column switches and are removed together.
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Set the steering wheel to the center position.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the driver's side footwell trim.
Loosen the steering column trim screws, release the sides from the upper trim and remove the trim.
Loosen 1 screw securing "1" switch on the steering column.
Remove the fastener using a screwdriver.
Squeeze the locking hooks on both sides and pull out switch "2".
Release the cable ties. Disconnect the connector.
Insert the switch and snap it into the lock.
Connect the switch connector. Secure the wires with clamps.
Install the switch mount on the steering column.
Screw the fastener on.
Snap the steering column trim into place on the sides and screw it on.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Check the operation of the direction indicators.
Install the steering wheel
Install the driver's side footwell trim.
Set the time on the clock.
Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
Removal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".
Note: On vehicles with a six-cylinder engine, the battery is located in the luggage compartment on the right side next to the spare wheel.
Set the steering wheel to the center position.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the driver's side footwell trim.

Loosen the steering column trim screws, release the sides from the upper trim and remove the trim.
Loosen 1 screw securing "1" switch on the steering column.
Remove the fastener using a screwdriver.

Squeeze the locking hooks on both sides and pull out switch "2".

Release the cable ties. Disconnect the connector.
Installation
Insert the switch and snap it into the lock.
Connect the switch connector. Secure the wires with clamps.
Install the switch mount on the steering column.
Caution: When installing the mount, the turn signal switch must be in the middle position to avoid damaging the return cam.
Screw the fastener on.
Snap the steering column trim into place on the sides and screw it on.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Attention: Connect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the electronic control unit of the injection device may be damaged.
Check the operation of the direction indicators.
Install the steering wheel
Install the driver's side footwell trim.
Set the time on the clock.
Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
