Removal and installation the fuel level sensor (BMW 3 Series E36)

On BMW 3-series cars, each chamber of the fuel tank has its own fuel level sensor. To check the sensors, they must be removed. The sensor in the right chamber of the fuel tank contains the fuel pump. Therefore, to remove the pump, you must remove the right fuel level sensor.

Warning: Do not make an open fire! Fire hazard! When removing the fuel level sensor, the fuel tank must not be filled. Therefore, either drive out all the fuel or pump the fuel into a container of appropriate capacity. These works should be carried out outdoors or provide adequate ventilation.


Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".


Remove the rear seat.

Fold back the trim under the seat cushion.
