Oil pressure, level and temperature sensors — removal and installation (BMW 3 Series E46)
Oil pressure alarm sensor
1. Unscrew the oil filter cap - this will allow the oil from the filter to drain into the pan and reduce oil loss when replacing the sensor.
2. Remove the air cleaner as shown in a chapter 4A.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor and unscrew the sensor from the base of the oil filter housing (Fig. 18.3).

4. Screw in the new sensor and tighten it to the specified torque. Connect the connector.
5. Reinstall the air cleaner and oil filter cover. Fill the oil to the proper level.
Oil level alarm sensor
6. Drain the oil from the engine (see chapter 1).
7. Remove the crankcase guard from under the engine.
8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil level sensor, unscrew the three mounting nuts and remove the sensor from the pan (Fig. 18.8).

9. Clean the surface of the tray under the sensor.
10. Install the sensor with a new gasket and tighten the mounting nuts securely.
11. Reinstall the engine crankcase guard. Fill the engine lubrication system (see chapter 1).
Oil temperature sensor
12. Unscrew the oil filter cap - this will allow the oil from the filter to drain into the pan and reduce oil loss when replacing the sensor.
13. Remove the air cleaner (see chapter 4A).
14. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil temperature sensor and unscrew the sensor from the base of the oil filter housing (fig. 18.14).

15. Screw in the new sensor and tighten it to the specified torque.
16. Install the air cleaner and oil filter cover. Fill the engine lubrication system.
