Cuffs — replacement (BMW 3 Series E46)
Front crankshaft oil seal
1. The procedure for replacing this seal is described in paragraph 6 as part of the timing chain cover removal and installation procedure.
Rear crankshaft oil seal
Note: A new gasket will be required for the cuff body during assembly.
2. Remove the flywheel (or a faceplate), as specified in paragraph 15.
3. Unscrew the bolts securing the rear side of the pan to the cuff body.
4. Unscrew the bolts securing the cuff housing to the cylinder block.
5. If the cuff body has stuck to the pan gasket, separate the cuff body from the gasket with a sharp thin tool. Do not damage the pan gasket.
6. Remove the housing with the cuff from the cylinder block. If the housing does not separate from the cylinder block, tap it with a mallet. Do not press the housing from the cylinder block with any tool, since their mating surfaces will almost certainly be damaged.
7. Remove the gasket.
8. Carefully remove traces of the old gasket from the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and the cuff housing. Do not damage the pan gasket. If the pan gasket is damaged, remove the pan (see paragraph 12) and replace the gasket.
9. Support the cuff body on two wooden blocks and knock out the old cuff with a hammer through the punch.
10. Clean the bore for the cuff in the housing.
11. Since April 1998, a cuff without a spring has been produced as a spare part. Such a cuff can only be installed using a special mandrel (included with the new cuff). Insert the mandrel into the cuff. Carefully press the cuff with the mandrel into the housing with a hammer through a pipe of a suitable diameter or a wooden block (fig. 14.11).

12. Make sure the seal housing dowel pins are in place in the cylinder block and install a new seal housing gasket onto them.
13. Install the housing with the cuff onto the gasket, placing the cuff with the mandrel on the crankshaft.
14. Screw in the bolts that secure the housing to the cylinder block and to the sump and tighten the bolts only by hand for now.
15. Tighten the housing mounting bolts to the cylinder block to the required torque first, then to the sump.
16. Remove the mandrel from the cuff and install the flywheel (faceplate) in place as described in paragraph 15.
Camshaft seals
17. The camshafts are sealed not by cuffs, but by cylinder head cover gaskets and timing chain cover gaskets.
