Disassembling the secondary shaft (BMW 5 Series E12)

Remove from secondary shaft in sequence and arrange in order of removal (see photo and drawing) fourth gear synchronizer locking ring, locking and adjusting rings, sliding clutch with hub and third gear synchronizer locking ring, needle bearing and third gear gear.

Remove from secondary shaft in sequence and arrange in order of removal (see photo and drawing)…


Place the secondary shaft with the 2nd gear pinion on a press and press the speedometer drive pinion, thrust washer, reverse gear pinion, spacer sleeve, needle bearing, 1st gear pinion, 1st gear synchronizer locking ring, 1st and 2nd gear synchronizer sliding sleeve with hub and 2nd gear synchronizer locking ring, needle bearing and 2nd gear pinion off the shaft.

Clean the parts and check their condition, replace defective or badly worn parts.

Note: The intermediate shaft rear bearing can only be removed after the gearbox housing rear cover has been heated.
