Removal the gearbox (BMW 5 Series E12)

Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals and, working from the engine compartment, unscrew the bolts securing the gearbox housing to the engine block.

Remove the exhaust pipe mounting cross member from the gearbox.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.

Disconnect the propeller shaft from the secondary shaft flange of the gearbox, leaving the flexible coupling on the end of the propeller shaft.

Remove the intermediate support cross member of the propeller shaft, remove the front propeller shaft.

Disconnect the flexible speedometer drive shaft from the gearbox and the wire from the reverse light switch.

Remove the wire bundle from the mounting bracket and unscrew the transmission mounting bolts to the suspension bracket.

Remove the fastening clamp from the gear shift drive rod and knock the cylindrical pin upward.

Remove the fastening clamp from the gear shift drive rod and knock the cylindrical pin upward.


Remove the clamp securing the clutch hydraulic drive slave cylinder pipeline. Remove the retaining ring, remove the clamp securing the protective sleeve and remove the clutch slave cylinder by moving it forward.

Loosen the bolts securing the front gearbox support and remove the lower clutch housing cover.



Loosen the bolts securing the rear crossmember of the gearbox to the body floor brackets.

Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and unscrew the lower bolts securing the gearbox housing to the engine block.

Move the gearbox back and remove it.
