Determining the thickness of the secondary shaft adjusting rings (BMW 5 Series E12)

            0

Measure the length of the gear block between the shoulder of the hub of the synchronizer clutch of the III and IV gears, having first moved one of the synchronizer crackers as far as possible (see photo), and the ground surface of the reverse gear.

Measure the length of the gear block between the shoulder of the hub of the synchronizer clutch of…

Using the formula C=A-B, calculate the thickness of the thrust washer between the reverse gear and the driving gear of the speedometer drive, which determines the axial clearance of the secondary shaft, where:
  • C — thickness of the thrust washer;
  • A is the basic length of the secondary shaft gear block, equal to 138 mm;
  • B is the distance between the shoulder of the hub of the synchronizer clutch of the third and fourth gears and the ground surface of the reverse gear.

Measure and record the thickness of the speedometer drive pinion.

Press the speedometer drive pinion onto the secondary shaft using a mandrel with an inner diameter of 38 mm and an outer diameter of 45 mm until it stops with a force of no more than 2 tf.

Using the formula X=A+D, determine the total length of the assembled secondary shaft, where:
  • X — total length of the assembled secondary shaft;
  • D — thickness of the speedometer drive pinion.

Press the secondary shaft rear bearing into the rear crankcase cover and measure the depth of the rear crankcase cover with the new gasket installed (see photo).

Using the formula Y=F-(X-E), determine the thickness of the adjusting ring installed on the secondary shaft to adjust the position of the gear block relative to the rear bearing and the rear cover of the gearbox housing, where:
  • Y — thickness of the adjusting ring installed under the rear bearing of the secondary shaft;
  • F — basic depth of the rear cover of the gearbox housing, equal to 116 mm;
  • E — measured depth of the rear cover of the gearbox housing with the pressed-in rear bearing of the secondary shaft and a new gasket.
