The latest models are equipped with an auxiliary security system (SRS), including airbag. This system is designed to protect the driver from serious injury in the event of a frontal collision. The system consists of an airbag module in the center of the steering wheel, two impact sensors mounted on the front fender panels on the inside, and a safety sensor located in the passenger compartment. SRS shock sensors (indicated by an arrow) located in the engine compartment - regularly check for damage to the wiring.
The airbag module includes the airbag housing and airbag inflation pump units. The pump assembly is mounted at the back of the casing above the gas port, inflating the bag almost instantly after the system sends out an electrical signal. This signal is transmitted through a wire that is specially twisted several times so that the signal is transmitted regardless of the position of the steering wheel.
The SRS system has three sensors: two at the front, mounted on the fender panels on the inside, and a safety sensor located inside the passenger compartment. Shock sensors typically respond to pressure by completing an electrical circuit when there is a sufficient impact. An electrical signal from the impact sensors is sent to a third sensor, which then completes the circuit and inflates the air bag.
The module containing the safety sensor monitors the operation of the system. It checks the operation of the system each time the ignition is turned on by causing the AIRBAG warning light to come on (airbag), and then turning off if the system is working properly. If the system is faulty, the warning light remains on. If the AIRBAG lamp stays on, or if it comes on while the vehicle is running, take your vehicle to the dealership immediately.
