Adding oil to the engine (BMW 5 Series E34)

If necessary, add oil into the oil filler neck on the cylinder head cover. Do not exceed the maximum permissible level (upper mark on the dipstick).

The volume of oil corresponding to the interval between the marks on the dipstick is about 1 liter. Adding more oil than required is useless and even harmful to the engine. In addition, excess oil quickly burns out, so it creates a deceptive impression of excessive oil consumption.

Oil should be added only if the level drops, approaching the lower mark on the dipstick. However, the oil level should not fall below this mark.

BMW engines are designed in such a way that when using high-quality branded oils, additives are not only not needed, but under certain circumstances can even cause engine damage. This also applies to oils for manual and automatic transmissions, rear axle gearbox and power steering.
