Checking the battery (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

Special tool required:
  • A device for testing the density of electrolyte (densimeter).

Replacement materials:
  • Distilled water.

For better weight distribution, the battery is located in the luggage compartment under the right side trim.

Fold the side panel down using the handle.

Loosen the retaining clip and remove the cover from the battery.

Checking the electrolyte level

For a serially installed battery, a single filling with electrolyte is usually sufficient for the entire service life. However, the electrolyte level must be checked regularly. In this case, a densimeter can be used to determine battery charge level.

Warning: Do not expose the battery to open flame. Explosive hazard!

The electrolyte level should be approximately 5 mm above the lead plates, i.e. approximately reaching the lower edge of the adjacent edge. If the level is lower, raise it to the required value. To do this, unscrew the "arrow" plugs and add liquid to each element up to the mark visible through the filler hole.

Caution: Use only distilled water for refilling.
