1. Remove the soundproofing casing.
2. Remove the stiffening plate.
Caution: Work on the cooling system should only be performed when the engine has cooled down.
Attention:
- Collect the drained coolant and send it for disposal.
- Observe the applicable national disposal regulations.

3. Unscrew the cap (1) on the expansion tank of the cooling system.

4. Loosen the drain plug (1) on the radiator.

5. Unscrew the drain plug (1) on the cylinder block.
Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the seal.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

6. Loosen the screw (1) to bleed air.
Note: Only for modification with M47 T2 engine.
Note: Only the prescribed coolant may be used, see List of approved BMW working fluids, Main group 17.
Note: When filling the coolant, follow the steps below.
7. Turn on the ignition.
8. Set the heating control to maximum temperature and the fan to minimum speed (at the same time, the heating valves are fully opened and the additional pump is running).
9. Slowly fill the expansion tank with coolant.
10. Screw in the air bleed screw on the expansion tank after the liquid flows without bubbles or after filling to the maximum level.
11. Bleed the cooling system.
Draining and filling coolant (M54, N46)
Attention:
- Risk of steam burn.
- Work on the cooling system should only be performed when the engine has cooled down.
Attention:
- Collect the drained coolant and send it for disposal.
- Observe the applicable national disposal regulations.
1. Remove the intake manifold.
2. Remove the engine crankcase protection panel.
3. Remove the stiffener plate.

4. Unscrew the cap (1) on the expansion tank of the cooling system.

5. Unscrew the threaded plug (1) of the drain hole at the bottom of the cooling system radiator.
6. Drain the coolant, collect it and send it for disposal.
7. Unscrew the plug (2) at the bottom of the radiator expansion tank.
8. Drain the coolant, collect it and send it for disposal.
Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring.
Tightening torque: 2.5 Nm.

9. Unscrew the drain plug (1) on the cylinder block.
10. Drain the coolant, collect it and send it for disposal.
Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

11. Loosen the screw (1) to bleed air.
12. Turn on the ignition.
13. Set the heater control to maximum temperature.
14. Set the fan to low speed. At the same time, the valves of the heating unit open.
15. Pour slowly.
16. Screw in the air bleed screw when clean fluid starts to flow (without air bubbles) coolant.
17. Fill the radiator expansion tank with coolant up to the maximum mark.
Note: The mark (2) is then level with the top edge of the expansion tank.
18. Bleed the cooling system and check it for leaks.
