Characteristics of the valve timing mechanism (BMW 3 Series E21)

            0

The engine uses a valve timing mechanism with an overhead camshaft, the drive of which is carried out by a double-row roller chain. The chain tension is adjusted automatically by a tensioner with a hydraulic shock absorber and a lock.

The timing covers are cast from aluminum alloy.

Note: Since November 1978 the camshaft drive is carried out by a single chain.

Number of teeth:
  • camshaft pulley: 26;
  • crankshaft pulley: 13.

Number of chain links: 94.

Double strand chain dimensions: 3/8" x 7/32".

Chain roller diameter, mm: 6.35.

Valve timing (with the calculated clearance between the rocker arm nose and the camshaft back).

Start of opening of the intake valve before TDC of the exhaust stroke with an advance of: 4°.

Closing of the intake valve after BDC of the compression stroke with a delay of 52°.

Start of opening of the exhaust valve before BDC of the working stroke with advance: 52°.

Closing of the exhaust valve after TDC of the exhaust stroke with a delay: 4.

Camshaft

The camshaft has three bearings.

The camshaft has three bearings.

Clearance between mounting flange and camshaft, mm: 0.02-0.13.

Clearance between camshaft journals and bearing holes, mm: 0.034-0.075.

Runout of the ignition distributor sensor drive gear, mm, no more than: 0.025.

Camshaft cam lift, mm: 7.0267±0.080.

In engines of cars of the "316" model (up to 1980 model year), "318", "320" n "320i" the same camshaft is used.

In engines of cars of models "315", "316" (since 1981 model year) and "318)" uses a camshaft of a modified design.

Camshaft drive chain tensioner

Length of the tensioner plunger, mm: 61.8-62.0.

Length of spring in free state, mm: 155.5.

Wire diameter, mm: 1±0.015.
