Disassembling the cylinder head (BMW 3 Series E21)

Remove the ignition distributor.

Place the cylinder head on support 111040 and remove the central oil line.

Remove the fuel pump and take out the push rod.

Set the rocker arms of the intake and exhaust valves of all cylinders to the position corresponding to the largest clearance between the rocker arm eccentric and the end of the valve stem.

Install support plate 111040 on the cylinder head and load the valve rocker arms.

Check the clearance between the mounting flange and the camshaft.

Remove the mounting flange and carefully remove the camshaft from the cylinder head bearings.

Remove the base plate.

Move the valve rocker arms with the retaining rings on the axles and remove the retaining rings.

Remove the ignition distributor mounting flange.

Use a drift to knock out the valve rocker arm axles.

Remove the springs, thrust washers, rocker arms, and mounting washers and place them in the order of disassembly.

Release the valves from the crackers by compressing the valve springs with a special device or mandrel 111040 with a special wooden lining.

Remove the springs with plates, remove the oil deflector caps from the valve guide bushings.

Remove the valves and place the removed parts in order.

Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and cylinder block.

Check the cylinder head mating surface for warpage using a ground straightedge and feeler gauge.

If necessary, grind the mating surface of the cylinder head within the permissible limits (see subsection "Detailed technical specifications"), In this case, it is necessary to grind the upper cover of the valve timing mechanism to the same extent.
