Cylinder head assembly (BMW 3 Series E21)

            0

Clean and check the condition of the parts thoroughly.

The cylinder head is assembled in the reverse order of disassembly, taking into account the following:
  • before installing the valves, lubricate the holes in the valve guides and the valve stems with engine oil;
  • before pressing the valve stem seals onto the valve guides, seal the valve stem cracker grooves with adhesive tape to prevent damage to the valve stem sealing edges;
  • after installing the upper spring plates, compress the springs with tool 111040 or a universal tool for removing valve springs, install the valve crackers;
  • insert the rocker shafts, paying attention to the correct position of the springs, rocker arms, support and mounting washers (see photo). Note that the hole in the intake valve rocker shaft on the rear end of the cylinder head remains open, and the hole in the exhaust valve rocker shaft is closed with a plug. If the plug does not fit tightly, it must be replaced; when installing a new plug, apply a sealant such as Loctite 270 to the mating surfaces;
  • when installing the valve rocker arm axles, it is necessary to align the recesses in the axles with the holes for the cylinder head mounting bolts;
  • to install the camshaft, place the 111040 tool on the cylinder head and install the camshaft, after making sure that the valve clearance adjustment eccentrics on the rocker arms are in the position corresponding to the maximum clearance, and having lubricated the bearing journals and supports of the camshaft with engine oil;
  • install new rocker arm shaft plugs, after applying a sealant such as Loctite 270 to the mating surfaces.
  • after installing the camshaft mounting flange, make sure it rotates freely.

after installing the camshaft mounting flange, make sure it rotates freely.
